Origin & Quality
Sourced from family-owned farms in Pitalito, located in Colombia’s Huila department, this Excelso grade coffee represents some of the finest Colombian green coffee available. Pitalito is the second most populous municipality in Huila, where humid climate and volcanic soil create ideal conditions for exceptional coffee. Named “El Tiple” after the traditional Colombian string instrument, this coffee celebrates Colombia’s distinctive micro-climates and rich musical heritage.
The Excelso classification signifies that these beans meet strict quality standards set by the Colombian Coffee Federation: screen size 14 (indicating larger, more developed beans), zero primary defects, and no more than five secondary defects per 500g sample. This is specialty-grade Colombian coffee at its finest.
Growing Conditions
Grown at elevations ranging from 1,500 to 1,800 meters above sea level, these beans develop slowly in Huila’s volcanic soil, producing denser cherries with complex flavors. The region’s proximity to the equator provides consistent temperatures between 18-21°C most of the year, with cooler periods from May through July. Huila’s two annual harvests—September through December (main crop) and April through June (mitaca crop)—ensure year-round availability of fresh Colombian coffee.
Coffee cherries are handpicked at peak ripeness, then processed using the traditional washed method. The beans are floated and sorted, depulped, fermented to remove mucilage, and sun-dried to optimal moisture levels. This careful processing highlights the terroir and true character of Huila’s distinctive cup profile.
Flavor Profile
In the cup, you’ll find notes of milk chocolate, brown sugar, and tart dried fruit, with medium acidity and medium body. Huila coffees are celebrated for their bright acidity, natural sweetness, and fragrant aroma—a signature profile shaped by volcanic soil and ideal growing conditions. Depending on roast level, expect flavors ranging from bright fruit and caramel in lighter roasts to rich chocolate and molasses in darker profiles. This versatile coffee excels as espresso or filter coffee.
